This month’s (November issue) main feature is all about preparing for the coming winter months, in particularly encouraging readers to consider winter tyres. Two manufacturers, Audi and Toyota, are also encouraging this. Winter tyre sets are now available from Audi Centres starting from a reasonable £550 (including VAT and fitting).

For owners with the larger 16in – 19in wheels, winter tyre sets prices start at £792 (including VAT and fitting). It is significant that even a manufacturer with the famed quattro all-wheel drive system, can see the benefits of adding winter tyres. Audi suggest that fitting winter tyres can increase grip by up to 60 per cent and reduce braking distances by 20 per cent, which is a highly significant two car lengths. The winter tyre sets come with heavy-duty storage bags to protect the original fit ‘summer’ wheels and tyres while they are in storage. Audi centres are also offering to store the tyres while not in use.

NovNewsSeasonThe 2011 show season ended last month with the LRO Show at the East of England Showground near Peterborough. Always the swansong to all the outdoor Land Rover and four-wheel drive shows of the year, it’s held in mid September and is often graced with better weather than the earlier shows and this year was no exception. Hils Everitt went along with her camera for a final season’s report.

Despite the good weather, there was feeling that it was a little smaller and not so well attended by the trade than in previous years, but there was a good mix of travel companies, such as Atlas Overland, Land Rover parts and build specialists, plus a healthy club showing – something that you can always rely on from the Land Rover faithful.

It seems we are becoming a nation of ‘Del boys’ when it comes to selling our cars, with one in five of us admitting to tell lies when selling our cars. This is the result of a survey of 2000 motorists done by used car website Trusted Dealers (www.trusteddealers.co.uk). If a total of 6.8million used cars were sold in 2010, that means a massive 1.4million of them could have been sold ‘dishonestly’.

Initially that might draw a rye smile, it is obviously significant that such sales could be potentially dangerous. Obviously, it is ‘money’ that is the main reason for these untruths, which are mainly hiding existing faults, covering up mechanical issues, and hiding a poor service history. Trusted Dealers has launched ‘Scambusters’, a new consumer campaign to expose scams and dodgy dealings whilst providing topical consumer advice to help protect buyers. As part of the campaign, Trusted Dealers has created a dedicated Scambuster webpage containing a downloadable safe buying guide, and is encouraging ripped off motorists to post details of scams to help warn other drivers of unscrupulous practices.

NovNewsMAseratiA new luxury SUV comes from perhaps the unlikely source of Italian sports car manufacturer Maserati. Although to the SUV market, the Italians are nothing if not confident of the product with the announcement claiming: “For some reason SUVs today never seem to offer the kind of uplifting driving pleasure and luxury atmosphere that are two givens of today’s high-end sports and luxury cars. And this is precisely what Maserati set out to do with its new sport luxury SUV concept.”

Bet that comment went down well at Land Rover, Porsche, BMW, Jeep et al….
The actual idea of a Maserati sports utility was shown at the 2003 Detroit Motor Show. The Kubang concept was not progressed. However, recent links with Jeep, may now have changed those plans, resulting in the Maserati Kubang becoming a full production model.

NovNewsSpeedlinerFrom a one man business back in 2000 to becoming the longest established, and most successful spray liner company in the UK in 10 years is an impressive claim. Anyone looking for load-bed protection in their pick-up, or commercial vehicle really should start with a look at the Speedliner website.

With over 90 authorised dealers, there must be one close to you. The success of the product has much to do with the development of the registered Speedliner HC (Hygiene Coat) which is claimed to be the only spray, brush or roll-on polymer protective coating that contains an active anti-bacterial, anti-microbial. This year is Speedliner’s 10th anniversary and we wish them well. If you want to know more, go to: www.speedlinereuro.com

Nov1stStartIt’s big, black and booming. Meet an ex-military Limited Hummer H1 that was driven overland from the Middle East to the UK before undergoing a transformation to take on the tough world of desert racing. Introducing… Aretha

Words: Hils Everitt

An ex-military Hummer H1 is a pretty rare sight here in the UK but, in recent years, I have come across two. Both black, both ex-US military, and both owned by huge enthusiasts; but that’s where the similarity ends.

The first one was featured in the magazine in 2009 and was shiny, pristine, and extremely under-used. It spent most of its time on the owner’s driveway, but was a magnificent specimen. The second is, as you can see, also black, but filthy, well used and an equally fine example, albeit in a very different way.

NovAdvStartThis is a story that has gone untold for nearly three decades. A group of inexperience Brits tackle the Dark Continent in a group of tired, second-hand, unreliable Unimogs – in search of ancient cave drawings. And adventure. They found both.

This story is about 28 years late for the copy date, but as far as I know, no other account has ever been published in any other mainstream journal. It’s the story of 30 or so people from all walks of life brought together for an ambitious journey to catalogue and record petroglyphs (ancient rock carvings) in the Tibesti Mountains in Northern Chad.

It was all so long ago that you will have to forgive me for any inaccuracies, I kept no diary so this is written from memory with a bit of poetic licence thrown in. The vehicles were bought from the £1000 each we contributed and from numerous sponsors who were supporting the project. It is also a story of a major change in direction of my life as it saw me shift from a career in car design, a dream for many these days, to working for the best part of the next 20 years in the circles of the adventure travel business.

It’s been a while since my beloved silver machine has graced the pages of the mag as I’ve not really done an awful lot with it, apart from a few pleasure trips, one up to the Norfolk Broads and the odd kit-lugging exercise to rugby matches.

So, all’s well in the Grand world, finally, after an annus horribilis in 2010. Well, that was until someone, who shall remain nameless, decided to do something totally idiotic and halt the poor Jeep, yet again, in its tracks. No, that doesn’t mean some stupid off-roading debacle, merely a complete lapse of brain activity which could have killed-off my beloved steed completely.

Okay, so after a superb trip to the Swiss Alps for some R ‘n’ R, the Grand was picked up from the valet parking at Gatwick and it was off to the shops to stock up the fridge and cupboard and get milk for that long-awaited decent English cuppa.

NovStaffLouiseSuzukiIt’s fair to say that more than just a spot of water has been falling out of the sky around these parts of late. Having quietly ignored my front brake pads while they continued to behave perfectly well for several months despite Phil’s dire warnings about the reluctance of the nearside wheel to spin freely while it was up on the hoist, I had a wee bit of a scare on a sneaky bend in torrential rain recently.

Negotiating a series of roundabouts while escaping the clutches of central Bradford, I very nearly swapped lanes rather more suddenly than I would normally prefer. I was accelerating gently up the middle lane out of an uphill lefthander, between lorries and cars on a very wet road, when I started to pirouette to the left! Nice if you’re a ballet dancer, but not so good surrounded by a ton of metal, which, given half a chance will overturn if you do anything unexpected.

This month we visit Profusion Customs, largest importer and stockist of Magnaflow exhausts in Europe and official UK stockist.  It’s an exhausting business, but the Jeep’s all the better for the visit

Words and photography: Matt Carson

NovJeepStartProfusion Customs is the type of company I like to deal with; a family business with a strong emphasise on customer service. The team are true specialists in that they only deal with exhausts and only sell market leading Magnaflow exhaust products.  So often nowadays, companies profess to specialise in everything!  Which, in my opinion, demeans the term specialist. A peek into Profusions stock room confirms this fact, it’s floor to ceiling packed with exhausts and all the necessary fitting components.

After a warm welcome to the comfortable and modern premises near Heathrow, the Jeep is up on the ramp and along with the Profusion crew of Raj, Jag and Ash, we all take a look at the crusty mess that is the stock Jeep exhaust system. Most likely all original, the exhaust has done well to last 14 years but is no longer at its best. The silencer is blowing slightly and no doubt half full of rusty flakes, while the tight pinched turns of the system no doubt rob power and hamper performance. The replacement exhaust that Profusion will fit aims to release these valuable extra horsepower and present a much smoother flowing exhaust, which in turn will also improve torque and fuel economy.

Profusion supplies Magnaflow exhausts in a direct fit, pre-bent format or as individual components. This flexibility allows you to create an exhaust just how you want it. Multiple exits, side exits, louder, quieter – you get the idea. It also means Profusion can create an exhaust for any vehicle. If you’re handy with the spanners you can do it yourself as Profusion can also supply all the extras such as their excellent heavy duty clamps, hangers, bends, catalysers and more. The thought of more horsepower, improved torque and economy are hard to resist, so let’s get started…
