CHINA’S SUV GROWTHAcross the globe from Los Angeles in the rather less glitzy Guangzhou Motor Show in China, SUVs were the most important new models. Indeed the influential China Car Times reported that the country was experiencing an ‘SUV boom’. One of the interesting new models is the Beijing BJ40 SUV, which they reported ‘has more than a casual look of the Jeep Wrangler’. The show also has the new Honda Urban SUV concept and Great Wall’s Havel H2 – the latter is thought to be coming to the UK. Honda’s Urban SUV concept was also shown at the Tokyo Motor Show and will be called the Vezel in the Japanese market. It is likely to be launched in the European market in 2015.

To emphasise this boom, Land Rover reported that October sales in China were 59,000 units, which is an increase of 15 per cent over the same month in 2012. There are currently 130 Land Rover dealers in China, and the company plans to expand this to 223. The scale of this market is hard to fully comprehend, but certainly underlines that it is boom time for SUVs across the globe.

FORD EDGE CLOSERThe Ford Edge Concept is the new large SUV due for Europe. We say ‘new’ but it has been available in North America for some time, we drove one through the Canadian Rockies last year (4×4, January 2013). As you would expect, it’s a highly competent SUV, and the model we drove was very highly spec’d. This latest generation model due for Europe will include all the latest technology of self-parking and obstacle avoidance. It is said to have a sleeker and sportier appearance, and will offer improved fuel efficiency. Our drive in the V6-engined model in Canada confirmed that the consumption was OK for the size of vehicle, although you have to balance the fact that we drove it in ‘Sport’ mode most of the time, and that fuel is cheaper even in the Rocky Mountains than back here in Surrey! It is expected that the Edge will be available in Europe towards the latter half of 2014, although whether that includes the UK has not been confirmed. Obviously, no prices have yet been announced.

CHANGING TIMESWhen Porsche unveiled its Cayenne SUV back in 2002, it was attacked by know-all doomsayers from all sides. Some thought the sports car company was selling its soul to produce an SUV, and those of four-wheel drive persuasion merely shrugged and muttered that it was so ugly, no one would want one. How wrong they all were. In the last 10 years, the Cayenne has become the best-selling model in the entire Porsche range. In the US alone, despite being Porsche’s biggest export market for its sports cars, an amazing 60 per cent of all sales are now for the Cayenne. It’s not surprising, therefore, that at the launch of the new Porsche Macan at the Los Angeles Motor Show last month, USA Today announced that Porsche had become “an SUV factory that happens to also sell sports cars”. How things have changed, and where, we wonder are the ‘it’ll never sell’ critics of the original Cayenne?

New Qashqai arrivesCan you believe that Nissan has actually produced two million Qashqais since the models introduction in 2007?! Those sorts of numbers mean that the latest version is obviously a very important launch. The new model is 49mm longer and is also slightly lower and wider. It’s been designed by Nissan Design Europe (based in the UK) with support from Nissan Technical Centre Europe (that’s at Cranfield, UK) and will be built in Sunderland. So, even if we are not that impressed with the model as an off-roader (and memories of the X-Trail and Pathfinder linger) then we are certainly pleased that the model exists and is built in the UK. As far as the numbers go, most Qashqai sales are for the two-wheel drive versions, but the four-wheel drive models are still available using Nissan’s ALL_MODE 4×4-I driveline, which can be matched to either six-speed manual or the all-new Xtronic automatic transmissions. The company also has the belief that owners and potential owners are keen on all the latest hi-tech communications and entertainment systems. The new model also has Front Collision Avoidance, Driver Attention Support, Intelligent Park Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition. Models will be available in the UK from February 2014.

Hils BlogOur columnist has been on her travels again and this time not to the most obvious 4×4 friendly town, but it seems the Big Apple is indeed the city to spot 4x4s…

I’ve been on my travels again, to one of my favourite places when it comes to 4x4s – North America. Having been to Utah and Arizona a couple of years ago on a superb overland journey that took in some incredible landscapes and terrain, last year I visited British Columbia and marveled at the plethora of brilliant trucks encountered on a daily basis. But this time was very different, as the location was New York City. Not the sort of place that you would expect to be brimming with impressive trucks, but those busy, often gridlocked streets actually contain far more top-notch 4×4 machinery than you’d expect in your average urban sprawl.

New York does suffer from heavy winters – all those chilly episodes of Friends and House and various movies with snowy backdrops are testament to that. So some decent machinery for the sometimes harsh conditions does not go amiss. In the UK, when we get severe weather, it’s often the case that emergency services can’t get through, and have to rely on Mountain Rescue/Search and Rescue Teams, or the AA/RAC or even the goodwill of local 4×4 owners to help out, and this tends to be isolated to rural areas.

Toyo winter tyre arrives

With the cold weather, now’s the time to consider fitting winter tyres to your 4×4. This month we have heard of a new tyre to add to the potential list from Toyo. Despite being called the Snowprox S943, this is not just a snow tyre, but like all winter tyres are designed to work when the temperature drops below that 7degC line. It is available in sizes from 165/70/14 up to 224/45/17. You can call your local tyre retailer or go on line for more details and prices.

Jumping Jeep Now we don’t usually cover classic military Jeeps… but then this amazing vehicle is nothing of the kind! For one Polish 4×4 enthusiast, the Jeep ‘look’ was what he wanted, but with reliable running gear, in this case, from standard Nissan parts! Yes, that’s right, this is a Jeep CJ7 Nissan. Sort of….

Words: Jakub Chelmicki  Photography: Igor Kohutnicki

The idea for this car came about by chance while I was doing an engine replacement in a friend’s passenger car. My colleague Michael was helping me and he casually mentioned that he’d give me one of his four (!) Jeep CJ7s, along with all the documents and suggested I rebuild it. Now I had a set of axles from a Nissan Patrol 260, a Nissan Patrol 160 gearbox with a transfer box, together with some other junk, so since I had the axles and gearbox, the engine was not going to be a problem, and I could do the wiring by myself. This would mean that working at my own pace, I could build a car in the shape of a classic Jeep, but based on my favourite Nissan mechanics. Michael is known for really outlandish ideas, so this one was no surprise. But the more I thought about it, the more I became hooked, and the project got under way.

January 2014 Issue of 4×4 Magazine

winter coverPerhaps it’s a little like the expression ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’, but this issue has been a refreshing return to down to earth four-wheel drives. Now, there’s nothing wrong with all the shiny, brand new polished metal and exclusive leather interiors of those mega-expensive luxury 4x4s we reported on in our 4×4 Of The Year issue last month, but for most of us, they will always remain just a dream machine. I must admit that I’d be tempted with a Range Rover Sport if those lottery numbers were to come in – very tempted to be honest – but I also know that I’ll survive without one. To be honest, getting the new Hankook winter tyres fitted to our long term test Grand Vitara gave me nearly as much pleasure this month.

It’s a great competent little 4×4, and given the panic scare stories appearing on the front pages of some newspapers – the north wind will blow and we are due to have snow – a winter tyre is a must. Since I hate the cold winter weather it would be a lie to say I can’t wait, but at least I’m prepared. It was interesting to hear two different stories from the Suzuki and Toyota dealers I visited this month; Jemca Toyota in Croydon are selling winter tyres, Suzuki in Bromley are not. What will it take to convince people? Maybe if a summer tyre shod 4×4 slides into the back of the Grand Vitara this winter when I manage to stop so much quicker, I’ll get one convert. Knowing your braking distances are so much shorter in a winter tyre shod 4×4 does lead to you keep a good look in that rear view mirror.
