MouldWhy put up with bare metal and drips of condensation in the rear of your Land Rover Defender 90 hardtop when these MUD-UK interior panels offer the chance of a bit of refinement? The tough plastic panels feature integrated storage solutions which help you make use of what has traditionally been dead space.

A choice of black or grey finishes is available and full fitting instructions are provided. Four self-adhesive closed cell foam pads slot behind the panels, thereby reducing sound intrusion and providing additional insulation. Two plain trim panels cost £200 including VAT, and storage nets will cost an additional £50. An LED lamp and switch is available for £25 and you can get speaker spacer rings for £6 a pair.

WinterWheelsFollowing its successful launch of a range of alloy wheels for SUVs earlier in the year, Oxigin has unveiled a new pair of rims for the winter. The VTwo and VTwo Black ‘Nightrider’ are manufactured in Germany and feature a special ‘Physical Vapour Deposition’ coating. This is designed to resist the grit and grime that assaults alloy wheels during the chillier months.

A range of sizes is available from 7.5×17 to 8×19 and the wheels are suitable for most types of 4×4. A special discount is being offered on the wheels at present, which means a set of the smallest rims can be secured for £556 including VAT.

Visit www.oxigin.co.uk for details.

November 2010 Issue of 4×4 Magazine

This month’s cover is rather a sad one. Yes, it does show off our beloved long-term Jeep Wrangler doing what it does best, demonstrating its prowess off-road, taking on the experts in the world of off-road club trialing. As you’ll read on page 56, our regular correspondent, and relative trials novice, Toby Savage had a great time and marvelled at the abilities of our lifted Jeep with its fat mud terrains but, sadly, this is the last time you will see the much-loved Wrangler ‘XUH4’ that has been with the magazine for over two years.

All good vehicle loans have to come to an end, but, in this case, it was rather unexpected as Chrysler decommissioned the Wrangler from the fleet, so it was suddenly called back. All the mods that 4×4 Magazine had fitted have probably now been removed and our highly capable Jeep is now in the hands of a dealer who may have no idea of its previous triumphs abroad and in the UK.

The reason the Wrangler went back so suddenly was the takeover of Chrysler by Fiat. As of 1st September, Jeep no longer had control over or access to press vehicles and the fleet was put under review with the new bosses.

polaris3After pressure from farmers and estate workers Polaris rewarded their pleas and has launched the first Ranger side by side diesel-powered ATV.

When the invitation came through to view the hot-off-the-factory-floor new Polaris Ranger Diesel side by side ATV at the Soltex – the show for everyone who works in the estate and sports ground management industry – the first thought was, not much we can tell about it sat on an immaculate trade stand bustling with smart management and no mud in sight.

So, it was with delighted surprise that we learned Polaris had secured the use of Soltex’s venue, the Royal Windsor Racecourse’s purpose-built offroad route secreted in the trees. The downside was that I wasn’t allowed to drive the Ranger in the mud, despite my off-roading credentials, but a quick blast on a stretch of tarmac was the best I’d get, although it did demonstrate the excellent top speed of 35mph. Okay, so that is 5mph less than the previous 455cc single cylinder four-stroke petrol unit, but this isn’t a vehicle built for speed.

adv2aOur long-term Jeep Wrangler has showed off its superiority on plenty of off-roading adventures, but it was time to see how it would fare on a real test of skill and precision, and so we entered it into a club trial… no pressure.

Looking forward out of the windscreen of the Wrangler, all we could see was blue sky. The view to the left and right was similar, but through the rear window was confirmation that we were still earth bound on the unforgiving surface of Yarwell Quarry in Leicestershire, a popular trials site with many Midland-based 4×4 Clubs. We were stationary, and from the advice I was hearing none of the Jeep’s wheels were actually touching the ground! It was not the grand return to competition I had envisaged − collecting a maximum 10 points on the very first section of eight.

Residual values for the new Nissan Juke crossover are some of the best in the industry. Data provided by CAP shows they range from an impressive 52 per cent to 54 per cent based on three years/60,000 miles of ownership. This competitive figure is higher than many of Juke’s B-segment competitors. The Juke’s rating is on a par with the MINI Countryman, which also has a RV of 52 per cent.

newshardcoreWith winter just around the corner, many motorists must be holding their breath to see if we’re going to experience another snow-ridden season as we suffered last year, writes Phil Weeden. As such, 4x4s and SUVs have seen their popularity increase; many people, however, are now also looking at all-wheel-drive estate cars.

Saab’s 9-3X is a relative latecomer to the party, and is, essentially, a jacked-up Saab 9-3 Sport-Wagon, it’s been raised by 35mm and acquired some new bumpers front and rear, including skid panels. Its XWD technology comprises an electronic Torque Transfer Device, which varies power delivery between front and rear axles. It works in conjunction with the electronic, limited-slip rear diff which will split the power across the axle to whichever wheel has the most traction. The XWD set-up is said to include pre-emptive engagement of the rear wheels rather than waiting for the front end to lose any traction before redeploying power to the back end.

Used car values increased in August for the first time in months, according to Auction4Cars, the UK’s fee-free car auction website. A price hike of £177.49 between July and August saw average used car values rise marginally to £2587.74 (equivalent to a 7.36 per cent increase). Used cars values have been falling since April, gradually cancelling out the highs of 2009 – bringing them more in line with those of 18 months ago.

newsrangeThe Range Rover Sport has been awarded ‘Best All Wheel Drive Towcar over 1800kgs’ by the judges of The Caravan Club’s Towcar of the Year 2011.

The Range Rover Sport – recently upgraded with a new 3.0-litre diesel engine, exterior design changes and a completely redesigned interior – was determined the best overall in the All-Wheel Drive over 1800kg category, beating the likes of the Honda CR-V, Toyota Land Cruiser and the Hyundai Sante Fe.

Each vehicle was assessed to determine its towing ability, dynamics when hitched, acceleration, braking and ability to cope with demanding hill starts.
