NovProdVENTIt seems that Defender drivers can say goodbye to damp sleeves in winter! The DefenderVent kit provides an effective solution to the age-old problem of the lack of side-window demisting facility on pre-2007 Defenders. The redesigned windscreen vent not only improves airflow to the windscreen but an additional outlet channels warm air to mini-vents fitted into the ends of the Defender dashboard.

The kit is available from MUD UK for £133.00 Inc VAT. Check out www.mudstuff.co.uk or call 01422 881951

NovProdTrolleyThe three-ton Trolley Jack trolley jack from Axminster is a capable bit of kit with its three-tonne lifting ability and its overall weight and size gives the impression it will last for years to come.  This makes it better suited to leave in the garage, rather than something you would stowaway in the boot because it will prove cumbersome to move in and out. Something of this rating will be ideal for 4×4 owners, but the lack of a rubber-jacking pad limits its usability on smaller vehicles because it may inflict damage on the sills, but pads such as this can be bought separately. The overall width really aids stability when the vehicle is in the air, because the narrower counterparts can often lift a wheel if the ground below isn’t completely level, which can be hazardous if an axle stand isn’t it situ.

While it would struggle with anything sporty or with a lower ride height due to the high entry point, if you are looking for a no nonsense trolley jack for a van or 4×4 then the Axminster three ton trolley jack will be a handy asset. Good value at £96.95 inc VAT, check out www.axminster.co.uk or call 0800 371822.

NovProdSteelIt seemed somewhat appropriate, given the main theme of this month’s issue, that as we closed for press we received details from the guys at Wheels ‘n’ Things. Now we are encouraging you to change your tyres, but that means you have to get the tyres fitted… then when summer returns, you have to change back. How about a set of steel wheels for your winter tyres? You can then swop those yourself, each winter. There’s an initial investment obviously, but the wheels and winter tyres could then last you for years and years.

Wheels and tyre packages start at around £350. You can contact the guys on 0845 263 0148 or go on-line to:  www.wheelsnthings.com

NovNewsJeepJeep’s 70th Anniversary year drew to a close with attendance at the Goodwood Revival, a fantastic event that anyone interested in motor vehicles should attend and enter into the spirit of a golden era of the ‘50s and ‘60s for motorsport, writes Hils Everitt. See next month’s issue for a dedicated report, as this year the event was lucky to have Jeep as a main sponsor. Celebrating 70 years of the iconic marque, the show was bedecked with Jeeps from the past, from Willys to Wagoneers and Renegades. But the big news story was delivered at a press conference, held at Lord March’s home, which revealed Jeep’s future plans and model line-up.

So far, 2011 has been an important year of re-establishing the Jeep brand globally, with the launch of the new Compass, cosmetically tweaked Wrangler and brand new Grand Cherokee. Here at 4×4, we mourned the loss of the budget Patriot and excellent 2008 Cherkoee, but the good news is that Jeep plans to bring in a Cherokee replacement to represent the D segment SUV. That is due for launch in 2014, as is an, as yet, unidentified B segment SUV, plus a new Compass. Jeep will also introduce to Europe a new Grand Wagoneer – a name that had disappeared many decades earlier. ‘We are developing this vehicle with Europe firmly in mind’ is the official line.

NovNewsDakarAnyone who saw the inspirational feature that appeared on BBC’s Top Gear programme, where a team of severely injured former service men and woman competed in a Comp Safari event, will be pleased to hear the news that these guys are looking to enter the 2014 Dakar. Project Mobility, a British not-for-profit organisation that sets out to help re-habilitate injured military personal, has joined with Bowler to provide the vehicles necessary. This all-new, fourth generation Bowler, code-named EXR, will allow the team to develop their off-road skills in national events next year, to give them the necessary experience for the Dakar.

Company Founder, Drew Bowler was understandably delighted to be involved: “It’s great to be able to support Project Mobility, and see a Bowler vehicle participating in yet another rally-raid competition.”

NovNewsChinaThe growth of China’s motor industry took a significant step forward at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September with the announcement from Changan of the company’s new SUV. There will also be a saloon and an electric car. The intent is clear, as the company announced, “The goal: To distribute over the next ten years, according to high quality and design standards produced cars in Europe.” Rather awkward English, perhaps, but the intent is clear.

Perhaps less well known to most British enthusiasts, Changan is a major global manufacturer. In addition to four major manufacturing plants in China, Changan also has six manufacturing facilities in Asia, America, Africa and Europe, there are Research and Development facilities in  Italy, UK, USA and Japan and the company has cooperated in building cars with Suzuki, Ford and Mazda for a number of years. It would seem, therefore, that it will not be long before the Chinese off-roaders will be seen, initially, on British roads and then perhaps, off-road as well?

4x4DakarProject Mobility, the British not-for-profit organisation which helps re-habilitate injured military personnel through motorsport, has selected specialist all-terrain vehicle manufacturer Bowler to provide the cars to help it reach its ultimate aim: completing the 2014 Dakar Rally.

The organisation – which appeared on Top Gear – is preparing to enter a team made up entirely of former service men and women, all of whom have suffered injury in combat, in the 2014 event.  The team will develop its rally-raid skills with other vehicles in national and regional events over the next three years, before tackling the 2014 Dakar in Bowler’s all-new, fourth generation model, codenamed EXR.

The Project Mobility venture aims to engage, involve and inspire injured military personnel, and the wider disabled community, to participate in motorsport and off-roading activities; enhancing confidence, independence and providing a sense of achievement – from behind the wheel.
