winchExtreme 4×4 has introduced a range of Yaletrac hand winches. They are lightweight, compact and feature high strength aluminium housing for maximum durability in the rough stuff. The winches also have a flat bottom surface which enhances stability when being used horizontally or vertically.

A shearing pin in the forward lever prevents overload, and spare shear pins are stored in the carrying handle or operating lever. Even better, a broken pin can be replaced without removing the load… although you’ll obviously want to reduce it before winching again.

Yaletrac winches feature 20 metres of special flexible six- strand rope, which has a steel core and is tapered at one end for easy threading. They are available in three sizes – 800kg, 1600kg and 3200kg. Prices start at £346.98 including VAT.

adv2aOur long-term Jeep Wrangler has showed off its superiority on plenty of off-roading adventures, but it was time to see how it would fare on a real test of skill and precision, and so we entered it into a club trial… no pressure.

Looking forward out of the windscreen of the Wrangler, all we could see was blue sky. The view to the left and right was similar, but through the rear window was confirmation that we were still earth bound on the unforgiving surface of Yarwell Quarry in Leicestershire, a popular trials site with many Midland-based 4×4 Clubs. We were stationary, and from the advice I was hearing none of the Jeep’s wheels were actually touching the ground! It was not the grand return to competition I had envisaged − collecting a maximum 10 points on the very first section of eight.

As part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of driving habits, seven motorists aged between 19 and 76 re-sat their driving tests. Only two of the seven participants in the first round of the experiment passed their test: Anna Dunlop (23) and Alan Hamilton (50). Those in their teens, 30s, 40s, 60s and 70s all failed to impress the examiner. The oldest participant, 76 year-old Robert Wright, failed after driving through a red light.

The new ‘60’ registration plate has seen September sales soaring in the UK, but as the month closes Ford of Britain boss Nigel Sharp has his concerns over the size of the real market. “There is a lot of excess capacity in Europe and several companies seem to be having a go at the UK market,” he said. That means a lot of discounting along with some self registrations among manufacturers and dealers to meet targets.

newsRNLISuzuki GB has announced that the Jimny 40th Anniversary website is now live. The site shows the history of the Jimny series since its launch in 1970 with the LJ10 model. Archive information is available on the site – www.globalsuzuki.com/jimny/index – on model background and specification with a range of photos of each model.

When it was introduced, the Jimny was an affordable and lightweight but fully capable on and off-road vehicle – as it remains – and was powered back then by a 360cc two-stroke engine.
