Hyundai’s quality control has revealed that first generation Santa Fe models produced between July 2000-June 2003 could have been affected by corrosion due to winter road salt conditions in the UK. In a small proportion of affected cars, the corrosion could affect the structural integrity of suspension trailing arms. Hyundai UK says owners should take them to a local dealer for inspection.

If you’re not sure what to put on your pressie list for Santa this Christmas then Atlas Overland can help as the company is now offering Gift Vouchers for its tours. Available in £10, £20 and £50 denominations, these vouchers can be redeemed against any Atlas Overland adventure (subject to availability). Vouchers may be ordered from [email protected] which will also provide all details of its 2011 tours.

Volvo has launched its new Winter Tyre Programme. The scheme is a response to last January’s heavy snowfall, which caused misery for millions of motorists. Volvo is offering drivers the option of swapping their normal road tyres for winter versions. The alloy wheel and tyre (Pirelli or Continental) packages start from £949+VAT. Customers can store their summer wheels and tyres with Volvo, either with their local dealership, or Volvo’s ‘Tyre Hotel’ where the ‘spare’ set of wheels and tyres are stored and the correct wheels fi tted every six months, for a twice yearly charge of £85 inc VAT. Visit your local dealer for details on the scheme for your XC60, 70 and 90.

Winter is just around the corner, and if the weather is anything like 2009/2010 then 4x4s owners will need to be prepared to save the day again

As I write this the leaves are falling from the trees and the glorious colours of autumn adorn my still-leafy corner of Kent. It’s a beautiful time of year but, as the weather chills and those east winds start to waft in, it’s time to prepare for what could be another snowy, freezing and icy winter.

Last winter, the heroics performed by the emergency services, the farming and rural communities and those members of the general public sensible enough to own 4x4s helped to quieten the anti-4×4 lobby, and it is heartening to note that they have been pretty quiet ever since. So let’s keep up the good work and be ready for whenever we might be called on again to perform the same essential and often life-saving duties as so many of the 4×4 community did last winter.

1amarotThe new Volkswagen Amarok pickup has been honoured with the International Pick-up Award 2011. This accolade, awarded for the first time this year, was judged by a panel representing 23 countries that elects the International Van of the Year awards.

During the judging process the Amarok was praised for its ‘effortless off-road abilities’, while its capacity on-road was judged to be the best against all other competitors. The jury was also impressed by the Amarok’s interior, in particular the layout and generous space for both front and rear passengers in the double-cab.

The jury commented: ‘The new Volkswagen Amarok distinguishes itself by fantastic driving qualities, both on- and off-road. It sets new standards in the pick-up category in respect to load capacity, payload, interior room, comfort, ergonimics and fuel consumption.’

6HotchI did say, didn’t I, that I wasn’t going to let Ivor loose in the Hotchkiss again, on account of his somewhat over-enthusiastic manner with the gearstick and the accelerator? Still, I’m a soft touch, so when he turned up at Boxgrove Pit again looking apologetic and promising not to do anything daft I relented, especially as he’d brought his nine-year old son Hayden along.

7RavBring it on, we’re ready! That was the (slightly exaggerated) thought that crossed my mind driving away from Kwik Fit in Caterham with our new Continental ContiCrossContact winter tyres fitted. As you can read in the Winter Driving feature on p74, we have decided to test out ‘winter tyres’ on our RAV4 and so went along to our nearest Kwik Fit to get the job done.

The reason for deciding to fit winter tyres to your 4×4 is covered in detail in the feature, but you only have to compare the tread patterns on the tyres to see that there is a significant difference; the grooves are significantly wider and the sipes (the tread on the edges of the tyres) are more numerous. It all bodes well for a winter of getting the maximum benefit from owning a 4×4.
