qx50c_sketchThe INFINITI QX50 Concept will make its global premiere at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

An evolution of the 2016 QX Sport Inspiration, the QX50 Concept shows how the design of its conceptual forebear could be adapted for a future production model in the world’s fastest-growing vehicle segment. INFINITI’s latest concept confidently articulates the artistic influence of the designer through the brand’s ‘Powerful Elegance’ design language. A ‘cabin-forward’ silhouette combines with taut, muscular lines and flowing surfaces telegraph it as a dynamic and practical SUV.

The organic forms of the ‘driver-centric, passenger-minded’ cabin harmonise with the exterior. Blending progressive design with elevated levels of modern craftsmanship, the QX50 Concept’s interior reflects INFINITI’s desire to challenge conventional approaches to premium interior design.

With the unveiling of the QX Sport Inspiration at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, we showed the future of INFINITI QX models. The new QX50 Concept evolves this concept further and shows how INFINITI could develop its future presence in the fastest-growing vehicle segment globally.”

q-webAt the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this month, Audi will present the Audi Q8 concept.

The near-production study represents a synthesis of the emotional styling of a coupé and the spaciousness that typifies an SUV, with all its variability. With this move, the brand is unlocking a new segment for the full-size category.

“With the Audi Q8 concept, we have created a new spearhead within our Q model line. Its design strongly evokes sportiness and prestige,” declared Audi Head of Design Marc Lichte. “What’s more, we believe an important aspect of this showcar is that it offers a spacious interior with four equally comfortable seats, even with the flat roof line.”

The study vehicle’s front end is imposing. The octagonal Singleframe is considerably wider than that in Audi’s current production models. It is positioned well forward, with three-dimensional sculpting. Many design elements of the Q8 concept are reminiscent of the Audi Ur-quattro of the 1980s. They include the extremely flat but very wide C-post, and the prominent, flared shoulders above the wheels. These balanced proportions give equal emphasis to the front and rear wheels – typically quattro.

‘Beautifully Created Winter Drive’ is available on all new SEAT car retail purchases, with £1,000 (including VAT) off all new SEATs ordered between 21 December 2016 and 23 January 2017. The offer even covers the in-demand Ateca compact SUV and New Leon range. The promotion also comes on top of all other existing national retail offers.

Commenting on the incentive, Steve Catlin, Head of Sales, SEAT UK, said, “SEAT’s had a great end to the year, with plenty of car awards, impressive Ateca sales, not to mention great media reaction to the New Leon. So, in the spirit of giving, I’m sure our new offer will tempt plenty of off- and online Christmas shoppers and New Year sale bargain-hunters into our showrooms over the next few weeks. And that’s even before we look ahead to some gifts of our own in the early part of the year, namely, New Leon in February and the exciting new Leon CUPRA 300 range, including the four-wheel-drive estate, in March.”

beaulieu-autojumble-will-poBack in 1967, what was then the Montagu Motor Museum held a jumble sale with a difference. One of the fields at Beaulieu in Hampshire was given over to dozens of stalls selling hard-to-find old car parts and spares, motoring books, mascots, brochures, advertising signs and petrol pumps – essentially anything with a motoring theme.

It was christened an autojumble and now, 50 years on, the Beaulieu Autojumble is acknowledged not only as the first but also the biggest this side of the Atlantic – the International Autojumble, held every September, covers three fields, has at least 2,000 stall holders and more than 38,000 visitors looking for those elusive parts. It’s said that if it can’t be found at Beaulieu, it doesn’t exist.

To mark that 50th anniversary, a flavour of autojumble fever is coming to the capital as Beaulieu partners with events organiser Brand Events to stage a Pop-Up Autojumble at the London Classic Car Show on 25-26 February 2017 at the ExCeL Centre in London.

Regular Beaulieu Autojumble exhibitors have been offered 60 stalls to sell all types of automobilia. If you’re missing an issue of a motoring magazine needed to complete a collection, or you’re looking for an obscure part for an equally obscure classic car, there’s a good chance you’ll find them here.

“Beaulieu created the autojumble movement a remarkable 50 years ago and we are very excited to have the very first Beaulieu Pop-up Autojumble at the London Classic Car Show, the first time it has left Hampshire. It underlines how significant our show has become in the classic car world,” said Event Director, Bas Bungish.

“In its entire 50 years, this is the first time our Autojumble has ventured away from Beaulieu and while we obviously can’t recreate the entire event at the London Classic Car Show, the Pop-Up Autojumble will give a real flavour of the world-famous events we hold here,” said Jane Riddiford, PR Manager at the National Motor Museum.

“We are sure our presence in London will entice more visitors to Beaulieu for this year’s two events, the Spring Autojumble (13 & 14 May) and the International Autojumble (2 & 3 September). Come along, you’ll be amazed at the treasure trove on offer.”

The Beaulieu Pop-Up Autojumble will be held on the Saturday and Sunday of the London show and will be staged alongside Car Club Square, which will be packed with classic cars owned by members of the country’s leading one-make clubs.

Visitors to the show are also promised a huge variety of classic machinery, ranging from early veterans to supercars, many of which will be put through their paces inside the halls of ExCeL. The show’s centre piece – The Grand Avenue, a motoring catwalk inside the central hall – will play host to 50 of the world’s most desirable classics under the banner of the ‘Perfect Ten’.

Five of the best saloons, coupés, convertibles, sports cars, supercars, hatchbacks, shooting brakes, sports racers, single-seater and streamliners will all be driven along The Grand Avenue, allowing visitors to see and hear their favourite classics in action. Other show highlights include a glittering celebration of 70 years of Ferrari road cars.

Entry to the show also gives entry to a sister exhibition, the inaugural Historic Motorsport International (HMI), which is being held in an adjacent hall at ExCeL. Devoted to all aspects of historic racing and rallying, among the celebrations at HMI will be the 50th anniversaries of both the all-conquering Ford Cosworth DFV Grand Prix engine and the birth of Formula Ford.

The London Classic Car Show and HMI will be held at ExCeL London, on 23-26 February, with access to both shows included in the entry price. Historic Motorsport International will open its doors at 12pm on Thursday 23 February, while the London Classic Car Show will burst into life at 3pm that afternoon.

  • Tickets are now available from the show website – thelondonclassiccarshow.co.uk and start at £24 for single adult entry (£27 on the door on the day).

kia-all-new-sportage-gt-line-s-arctic-white-solidDecember brings new changes to the all-new Sportage. The model, launched in February 2016, has had a huge 35,000 sold since then.

As well as the introduction of a ‘GT-line S’ model, a ‘KX-5’ version and a 1.7 DCT powertrain are now available. An updated multimedia system and new paint options have been added to the line-up. This means 2017 is set to be an exciting year for Sportage customers and the Korean car manufacturer hopes they will continue the Sportage’s popularity well into 2017.

‘GT-Line’ on Sportage has proved to be a big success in its first year, and now the range sees an even higher specification, the ‘GT-Line S’. This will provide the looks and styling of the GT-Line with a number of high level specification items to add further appeal to the line-up. The ‘GT-Line S’ will be paired with the high powered 2.0 CRDi 6-speed auto and the 1.6 T-GDi 7-speed auto DCT powertrains. Additions also include a heated steering wheel, headlamp washers, bi-xenon headlamps, smart park assist system plus much more.

Replacing the ‘First Edition’ is the KX-5. This is a range-topping high end, highly specified model that showcases the full extent of technology that the Sportage range has to offer, available with a 2.0 CRDi engine and 6-speed automatic transmission.  It features two-tone leather upholstery, electronic parking brake, wireless phone charging plus much more over the KX-4.

On ‘2’ and ‘3’ grades, the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) paired with the 1.7 CRDi engine will be available. This improves the MPG and lowers the CO2 when compared to traditional automatics. MY17 Sportage also has an upgraded multimedia system from the ‘2’ grade and above offering a number of key improvements such as 3D Mapping, SD map updates, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

As for the updated paint strategy, customers can choose whether to have Standard at no additional cost or Optional and Premium paint colours, for which the price will vary accordingly.

14121Beaver Garages, the family-run motor dealer based in Minehead, Somerset, has been appointed an MG Motor UK franchise, expanding the resurgent car brand’s network in the South East.

Established in 1981 as Richard Beaver Garages, the business operates from three locations in Taunton and Minehead, providing retail, servicing and used car solutions to drivers in the region. The move to MG is a major development for Beaver Garages, which chose the marque due to the growing reputation of its new models and the strong culture of collaboration from the manufacturer’s Longbridge team.

Group sales manager at Beaver Garages, Wayne Johnson, said: “Having talked to several other car manufacturers looking to expand their network, we found the team at MG to be very approachable, business-like and easy to deal with. Unlike many other big car brands, the team based in Birmingham was always easy to contact and very proactive when it came to setting up the franchise.”

Beaver Garages will begin actively retailing the MG3 supermini and all-new SUV, the MG GS, before Christmas.

Johnson continued: “While we were really impressed with the style, build quality and sheer value for money that the new MG range offered, we were also pleasantly surprised by the proactive way the company provides sales support for its models. For instance, MG’s current 0% finance offer on new models is an incredible incentive for new drivers to get behind the wheel of the funky supermini or bigger GS.”

Matthew Cheyne, Head of Sales & Marketing at MG Motor UK, added: “Beaver Garages is one of the most respected dealers in the South West. It has been offering great customer service for more than 30 years now and are very active in supporting local sports clubs and other community activities. Beaver Garages a great family team and we’re delighted to have them on board as an MG Motor franchisee.”

While MG sales will initially be conducted at Beaver Garage’s existing premises in Minehead, the business is planning to open a dedicated MG showroom in the summer of 2017.

201688_uber_launcheswebUber, the ride-sharing technology company, is expanding its self-driving pilot to San Francisco, California, using specially converted self-driving Volvo XC90 premium SUVs.

The move marks the next phase in a deepening alliance between Volvo and Uber after the two companies signed an agreement in August 2016 to establish a jointly owned project to build base vehicles that can be used to develop fully autonomous driverless cars. These cars were initially tested in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The latest cars to be used in San Francisco have been built by Volvo and sold to Uber, after which Uber’s own self-driving hardware and software package has been added, most visibly in the roof-mounted control apparatus.

These cars will drive around the streets of San Francisco autonomously, but as part of the pilot programme they will at all times have an Uber technician on board to supervise the car’s operation.

“The promise of self-driving ride sharing is becoming a reality,” said Mårten Levenstam, vice president product planning at Volvo Cars. “Volvo is proud to be at the forefront of the latest developments in the automotive world alongside our partners at Uber.”

The alliance with Uber forms one part of Volvo’s three-part plan to develop autonomous driving (AD) technologies.

In January 2017, Volvo will begin a project entitled Drive Me, which will be the world’s largest autonomous driving test in which up to 100 AD cars will be given to members of the public to be driven on real roads around Gothenburg, Sweden. Their experiences will be used to co-develop Volvo’s AD cars.

The second part is a joint venture with Autoliv, the leading automotive safety technology company, to set up a new jointly owned company to design and manufacture separately branded AD and driver-assistance software technology packages for sale to third-party OEMs. The new company will have its headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden, and an initial workforce taken from both companies of around 200, increasing to more than 600 in the medium term. The company is expected to start operations in the beginning of 2017.

The third part is the ongoing relationship with Uber to build and co-develop base vehicles for AD cars. This deal reduces Volvo’s development costs, gives it a chance to develop cutting-edge technology and could ultimately boost sales significantly.

The base vehicles are manufactured by Volvo and then purchased from Volvo by Uber. Volvo Cars and Uber are contributing a combined USD300m to the project. Both Uber and Volvo will use the same base vehicle for the next stage of their own autonomous car strategies.

The cars to be used in San Francisco are developed on Volvo Cars’ fully modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). SPA is one of the most advanced car architectures in the world and is currently used on Volvo Cars’ top-of-the-line multiple-award-winning XC90 SUV, as well as the S90 premium saloon and V90 premium estate.

SPA has been developed as part of Volvo Cars’ USD11bn global industrial transformation programme, which started in 2010, and has been prepared from the outset for the latest autonomous drive technologies as well as next-generation electrification and connectivity developments. It is these capabilities that attracted Uber to Volvo.

Used car, van and motorbike buyers can now access MOT history completely free of charge as part of My Car Check’s new Vehicle Factsheet, which also features other previously charged-for data, notably valuations. See: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUCP_vfha4E

Head of MyCarCheck.com, Roger Powell, said: “Our new Vehicle Factsheet provides buyers with everything they need to narrow their search. The MOT data is particularly useful as you can see if a vehicle sailed through its last test or needed work and a retest. The advisory notices are also very useful as they show what repairs will likely need doing soon. Potentially expensive items, like four worn tyres, can be grounds to push for a price reduction. The mileage data protects against clocking, while the valuations confirm if the sticker price is in the right ball park. All this, in one place, for free – why wouldn’t you do it?”

With information from the police, DVLA, insurers and finance houses, My Car Check holds comprehensive data on every vehicle on UK roads – things that buyers should be aware of before making an offer.
