Work smart

Good to see these days that work clothes have become a little more stylish over the years, while remaining practical and importantly, hard wearing. We were sent details of the latest work clothes from the Mascot Lemberg range. They are exceptionally light, so ideal for summer conditions, made from 50 per cent polyester and 50 per cent cotton. The details sent explained that the trousers ‘feature ergonomically formed trouser legs, which offer complete freedom of movement.” Now, you would think that that would be a given when it comes to trousers, but perhaps we are being a tad facetious! The trousers include D-ring, pen pocket, adjustable hammer loop and tool strap. Pockets are reinforced and the whole package looks pretty good to us. Visit your local distributor to inquire about Lemberg products or check out the website.

More options for Toyo M/T

The Toyo Open Country M/T tyre is now available in a further 12 fitments. The tyre has also gained Professional Off Road accreditation, which allows the tyres to be sold without the need for the recent EU labelling requirements. This tyre is a favourite with Robby Gordon who has used it on his Dakar-spec Hummer. It is also now being used by the Isuzu UK Works Rally Team. It’s certainly an aggressive looking tyre with its open, scalloped shoulder blocks aimed to ‘bite’ into mud, together with deep siping for good wet weather performance. The new sizes include: 31X1050 R15 109Q, 33X1250 R15 108P, LT235/85 R16 120P, LT255/85 R16 123P, LT225/75 R16 115P, LT245/75 R16 120P, LT265/75 R16 123P, LT285/75 R16 126P, LT305/70 R16 124P, LT265/70 R17 121P, LT295/70 R17 128P, and LT275/70 R18 125P.  For more details on the Toyo range of off-road tyres check out the website.

Rhino bumper

Incorporating a sizeable winch to the front of a truck often means the need for a new bumper. In many cases, this does destroy the lines of the truck, making it look very ‘add on’. It was great, therefore, to see this new Rhino4x4 Evolution front bumper, from Extreme Sales 4×4, which certainly looks the business. Although made in three pieces, once fitted it certainly looks like a complete unit. Besides looking pretty good, the bumper can be painted to match the trucks bodywork. Perhaps more importantly it is completely compatible with a vehicle’s airbag safety system. It has been made to preserve the original vehicle’s angle of attack so there is no loss of off-road ability. We think it certainly looks the business. For more details go to the website.

Spring clean

Surely you don’t actually enjoy cleaning your 4×4? If like most of us, you want to get it over with as soon as possible, then an efficient hand held vacuum cleaner would appeal. This is the new option from Electrolux called the WorkZone Z61A. It is claimed that it offers ‘deep down cleaning’ and can work on both horizontal and vertical surfaces. The company also says that it is ideal for cleaning down the backs of seats… It also comes with a crevice nozzle to get in those difficult places. If it cuts down the time spent cleaning the inside of my 4×4, then it’s probably worth the RRP of £49.99. Available at a variety of outlets.

Leather bagman

We just love this ‘classic’ leather tool bag from Gunsons. If you have a classic Land Rover, or similar older 4×4, this has to be one of your accessories. The bag has an approximate size of 150 x 145 x 380mm and it is made from heavy duty leather with stitched and metal riveted seams. The bag is secured with three straps and high quality buckles and includes an adjustable shoulder strap. It seems the guys at Gunson’s also have matching leather spanner rolls, but we certainly like the look of the bag. It’s good quality leather, so it’s not cheap and has a typical price of £72.55. Check different suppliers for the best deal.

SLING YOUR HOOKThere is now a new range of Warn slings and hooks available from the 4×4 experts Arbil. The new Warn Premium winch hook is coated with something called Cerakote, which is said to provide maximum protection and reliability against wear and abrasion. The hook is available in three varieties, for 18,000Ib capacity winches and under, for 12,000Ib capacity winches and under and for 5000Ib capacity winches and under, and these retail at £75, £58 and £39 inc VAT respectively.  We think they look excellent, and smiled when we also learned that, “the hooks have also been uniquely designed with a built-in beverage opener” – an essential for any off-road trip! Warn also has a new Pullzall sling is capable of lifting some 1000lb (454kg). If you want to know more, Warn is available through the UK exclusive distributor Arbil 4×4. Do remember to tell them that you read about it here first.

Bespoke DefendersYou have to admit that this Land Rover Defender looks the business! It’s one of the bespoke Land Rovers from Bespoke Cars Ltd, based at Harrogate in Yorkshire. Each Land Rover conversion is done to suit the customer, hence the name! While that might be a little too expensive for some of us, the guys at Bespoke have let us know that the super cool GTS-R Defender wheels are available at an excellent £245 per wheel, and to make that even more reasonable, there’s a 10 per cent discount for 4×4 Magazine readers (just quote the code: bes69). We will be looking at ‘special 4x4s’ in a future issue and look forward to learning more at what Bespoke has to offer.

Trac-GrabberHere’s an interesting new product that we have just heard about. Called the Trac-Grabber it’s claimed to be an inexpensive, and very simple to fit device to get a vehicle unstuck.  Basically you strap a large rubber pad across the tyre, which when rotated offers more bite and actually raises the tyre slightly. Looking at the demonstration video on the website, it looks a pretty good ‘get you home’ device for severe snowy conditions, but would probably be useful for commercial/utility organisations; not a bad addition to an overlanders emergency kit bag either. As yet, it’s not available in the UK – you heard about it here first, folks – but you can contact the company via the website. And if you do, please give us a mention!

Tracking your 4x4There’s a growing trend of quality 4x4s being stolen, and not all of them the top of the range expensive models either. Land Rover Defenders still seem to be ‘disappearing’ overnight, often broken up for spares. Security is a hot topic, and this is one new high tech modern option that while it may not stop you actually losing your 4×4, you will at least know where it’s gone! CarLock uses remote GPS technology so an owner will know immediately that a vehicle is being tampered with, and possibly stolen. Plugged into the vehicle’s diagnostic port it communicates constantly to the CarLock Cloud. This then links to the mobile phone app that the owner downloads, letting the owner know if the vehicle is moving outside its locked area. The app is designed to work even when not turned on. Interestingly, it is claimed that this app will not drain a phone’s battery life due to the built-in cellular and GPS antenna. The CarLock system has subscription plans for throughout Europe, not just the UK. The price of the unit is currently 99 Euros, with a monthly subscription fee of 4.90 Euros. To learn more, check out the CarLock website.

OME 4inch Wrangler liftJeep JK Wrangler owners can now buy a complete four-inch lift suspension kit. Old Man Emu is part of off-road experts ARB, and available in the UK through the guys at Arbil. The kit comprises of front and rear coil springs, Nitrocharger Sport shocks, steering damper, front Panhard rod, brakeline relocation kits, bump stop kit, coil packers, castor and driveline kit, along with anti roll bar disconnection kit and rear Panhard kit.
