Land Rover Discovery 3Every so often your brakes will wear out, and as is usual with any vehicle component the extra stress of off-roading means more frequent replacements. Brakes are no exception, as a touring off-road weighs more than a standard car, and then you’ve got grit and mud getting in the discs as well as extra use downhill. Traction control also wears a little, although that has much less effect on brake wear than might be thought.  This is because when a spinning wheel is braked to transfer torque to the other wheel on the axle there’s little force required to slow the spinning wheel – unlike the force required to brake a two or three tonne 4×4.

Anyway, off with the wheels and it was clear the Discovery needed a change of rear discs, and any time you change discs it’s a good idea to change the pads too. So that was done, but the electronic brake sensors weren’t the right ones so I left those off, and decided to just live with the dash light saying, now incorrectly, the pads were worn. So all was well until Mrs P reported a “funny noise” under braking.

Suzuki Grand Vitara Toyota RAV4It was somewhat appropriate that I drove our Toyota RAV4 to the dealer on what was obviously the coldest day of the winter so far. The temperature gauge actually said 2degC, but standing scrapping the ice from the windscreen, it certainly seemed a lot colder than that.

The journey to Toyota main dealer, Jemca, near Croydon was to have a set of winter tyres fitted to Sue’s RAV4, taking up the opportunity to test the manufacturer’s recommended options from Yokohama, the ‘W drive’ tyre, in 235/60 16. To be honest, this had not been our first choice as we had considered using winter tyres from either Pirelli or General Tire. We have had direct experience of the Pirelli Scorpion Verde, an excellent option, which made that first choice, the other option was that maybe General’s new Snow Grabber winter tyre would also be worth trying. Surprisingly, would you believe, neither are available in the UK in the 235/60 16 size suitable for (one of the most prolific SUVs in the UK) the Toyota RAV4! Odd, you have to admit. This problem was not going to put us off, however, and it led us to contact Toyota to find that the ‘official’ tyre choice for the company’s dealers is the Yokohama option.

Tractor World Show UPDATESFord and Massey Ferguson will take pride of place at Tractor World as the show marks major anniversaries for both companies. It will be 50 years since the Blues opened their new factory at Basildon in Essex and started building this highly praised 6X range of tractors, now often called the 1000 Series. They were officially unveiled by Henry Ford II in October 1964 in New York where 6000 dealers from 70 countries attended the launch. For Massey Ferguson, there is also a golden anniversary and Tractor World will celebrate the launch of the mould-breaking 100 Series. Visitors will see a massive range of both series of tractors – and if you have one you wish to enter, there is still time. The show is over the weekend of 1st and 2nd March 2014, at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern. Three Counties Showground is not far off the M5 in Worcestershire. Advance ticket prices are £10 per day for adults (£12 on the gate). Under 15s go free and there’s a great value weekend camping pass for two adults for the advanced price of just £50 (£60 on the day). For further information, call 01697 451882 or visit www.tractorworldshow.co.uk.

CHINA’S SUV GROWTHAcross the globe from Los Angeles in the rather less glitzy Guangzhou Motor Show in China, SUVs were the most important new models. Indeed the influential China Car Times reported that the country was experiencing an ‘SUV boom’. One of the interesting new models is the Beijing BJ40 SUV, which they reported ‘has more than a casual look of the Jeep Wrangler’. The show also has the new Honda Urban SUV concept and Great Wall’s Havel H2 – the latter is thought to be coming to the UK. Honda’s Urban SUV concept was also shown at the Tokyo Motor Show and will be called the Vezel in the Japanese market. It is likely to be launched in the European market in 2015.

To emphasise this boom, Land Rover reported that October sales in China were 59,000 units, which is an increase of 15 per cent over the same month in 2012. There are currently 130 Land Rover dealers in China, and the company plans to expand this to 223. The scale of this market is hard to fully comprehend, but certainly underlines that it is boom time for SUVs across the globe.

FORD EDGE CLOSERThe Ford Edge Concept is the new large SUV due for Europe. We say ‘new’ but it has been available in North America for some time, we drove one through the Canadian Rockies last year (4×4, January 2013). As you would expect, it’s a highly competent SUV, and the model we drove was very highly spec’d. This latest generation model due for Europe will include all the latest technology of self-parking and obstacle avoidance. It is said to have a sleeker and sportier appearance, and will offer improved fuel efficiency. Our drive in the V6-engined model in Canada confirmed that the consumption was OK for the size of vehicle, although you have to balance the fact that we drove it in ‘Sport’ mode most of the time, and that fuel is cheaper even in the Rocky Mountains than back here in Surrey! It is expected that the Edge will be available in Europe towards the latter half of 2014, although whether that includes the UK has not been confirmed. Obviously, no prices have yet been announced.

CHANGING TIMESWhen Porsche unveiled its Cayenne SUV back in 2002, it was attacked by know-all doomsayers from all sides. Some thought the sports car company was selling its soul to produce an SUV, and those of four-wheel drive persuasion merely shrugged and muttered that it was so ugly, no one would want one. How wrong they all were. In the last 10 years, the Cayenne has become the best-selling model in the entire Porsche range. In the US alone, despite being Porsche’s biggest export market for its sports cars, an amazing 60 per cent of all sales are now for the Cayenne. It’s not surprising, therefore, that at the launch of the new Porsche Macan at the Los Angeles Motor Show last month, USA Today announced that Porsche had become “an SUV factory that happens to also sell sports cars”. How things have changed, and where, we wonder are the ‘it’ll never sell’ critics of the original Cayenne?

New Qashqai arrivesCan you believe that Nissan has actually produced two million Qashqais since the models introduction in 2007?! Those sorts of numbers mean that the latest version is obviously a very important launch. The new model is 49mm longer and is also slightly lower and wider. It’s been designed by Nissan Design Europe (based in the UK) with support from Nissan Technical Centre Europe (that’s at Cranfield, UK) and will be built in Sunderland. So, even if we are not that impressed with the model as an off-roader (and memories of the X-Trail and Pathfinder linger) then we are certainly pleased that the model exists and is built in the UK. As far as the numbers go, most Qashqai sales are for the two-wheel drive versions, but the four-wheel drive models are still available using Nissan’s ALL_MODE 4×4-I driveline, which can be matched to either six-speed manual or the all-new Xtronic automatic transmissions. The company also has the belief that owners and potential owners are keen on all the latest hi-tech communications and entertainment systems. The new model also has Front Collision Avoidance, Driver Attention Support, Intelligent Park Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition. Models will be available in the UK from February 2014.

Hils BlogOur columnist has been on her travels again and this time not to the most obvious 4×4 friendly town, but it seems the Big Apple is indeed the city to spot 4x4s…

I’ve been on my travels again, to one of my favourite places when it comes to 4x4s – North America. Having been to Utah and Arizona a couple of years ago on a superb overland journey that took in some incredible landscapes and terrain, last year I visited British Columbia and marveled at the plethora of brilliant trucks encountered on a daily basis. But this time was very different, as the location was New York City. Not the sort of place that you would expect to be brimming with impressive trucks, but those busy, often gridlocked streets actually contain far more top-notch 4×4 machinery than you’d expect in your average urban sprawl.

New York does suffer from heavy winters – all those chilly episodes of Friends and House and various movies with snowy backdrops are testament to that. So some decent machinery for the sometimes harsh conditions does not go amiss. In the UK, when we get severe weather, it’s often the case that emergency services can’t get through, and have to rely on Mountain Rescue/Search and Rescue Teams, or the AA/RAC or even the goodwill of local 4×4 owners to help out, and this tends to be isolated to rural areas.
