landroverLand Rover and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched a new global initiative, under the theme ‘Reaching Vulnerable People Around the World’. Over the next three years, Land Rover has committed to help national Red Cross or Red Crescent societies implement or step up priority programmes in 15 countries, with a particular focus on two extensive humanitarian programmes in Sierra Leone and China.

In addition, and in response to the worsening situation in Pakistan affecting over 14 million people in an area equivalent to the size of the UK, Land Rover is donating six Defender 110 station wagons to the Pakistan Red Crescent Society to help its disaster relief operation. Many roads and bridges have been badly damaged; leaving many areas cut off from normal transport links. The vehicles will be used to deliver aid in the form of food, clean water, shelter and medical supplies to thousands of people in need in the most remote and cut-off communities. Jaguar Land Rover employees have also been raising money to support the relief operation through the British Red Cross.

Land Rover’s support will enable the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society to reach remote communities, improve access to health care and safe water, and support young people affected by civil war.

9-bookLittle Book of Land Rover, foreword by Stephen Vokins (ISBN 978-1-907803-01-7), is a cute little book, full of colourful photographs and interesting snippets of information about the iconic vehicle. It covers every model from the iconic Series I up to the current Freelander 2, giving a potted history as well as descriptions of key design features and range line-ups.

While there won’t be much in this book that is new to diehard Solihull enthusiasts, it’s a nice thing to have on the coffee table, or beside the loo, for when a moment of green oval indulgence seems appropriate. The section about specialist vehicles is disappointingly brief, but the discussion of expeditions is good and contains lots of decent G4 images.

With a retail price of just £7.99, we daresay this book would make a very good present for any Land Rover fanatic. It’ll no doubt find its way into a stocking or two once Christmas comes.

Whatever vehicle you own, it’s going to need some wheel rims. And while alloy wheels are all the rage with vehicle manufacturers, many off-road enthusiasts favour steel rims. We give you a guide to some of the options available

1-winchEver been annoyed by the way synthetic winch rope bunches at one end of the drum when you’re pulling to one side? If so, the Goodwinch Sliding Hawse is the answer to your prayers. It’s basically two fairleads, which fit over the payout for your winch: the bottom one is static, but the top one shifts from side-to-side, meaning you can control the way the rope pulls back into place.

The Sliding Hawse can be locked in a variety of positions, and is very easy to use. It’s made out of aluminium, which means it will be durable. Better still, by ensuring an even distribution of rope on the winch drum, it maintains an even pulling power, regardless of the direction in which your recovery takes you.

3-lightCheck out Hella’s new range of LED lights, aimed specifically at the agricultural and construction industries. LEDs last significantly longer than Xenon or halogen bulbs, and these new lights are suitable for 12- and 24-volt electrics. That makes them suitable for use on caravans, buses, traction vehicles, trailers… and 4x4s, of course.

6jeepHaving had a two-inch suspension lift fitted to my Jeep, courtesy of Trailmaster and Surrey Off Road, it was time to put the new system to the test off-road.

The climb is a short one, but deeply-rutted and with a sharp breakover at the top; so sharp and leading to such a maze of high humps and deep hollows that we’d never dared take the Cherokee up there before for fear of knocking off what’s left of the exhaust system. This time, however, the old Jeep was quite ready for it, boasting its new 50mm Trailmaster suspension lift. Knowing that even with the upgrade the Jeep would get cross-axled on the way up I pointed to the spot where I wanted Derek to aim the offside front wheel and told him to floor the accelerator. As the Cherokee flew up we could see the suspension at work, the longer front springs allowing inches more articulation up front, so there was hardly a moment’s hesitation and just a bit of scrabbling for grip as the truck crested the rise and came to rest teetering on the edge of the big hole down to the left.
